Active pool winterizing: complete guide
Active pool winterization: the key steps
During active winterization, ⟨strong⟩the filtration pump ensures water circulation⟨/strong⟩, which preserves its quality. This method considerably facilitates restarting the pool after winter, making it ⟨strong⟩particularly practical and efficient⟨/strong⟩.
In this detailed article, you will discover all the steps necessary to ⟨strong⟩successfully restart your pool after active winterization⟨/strong⟩.
12 Steps to Follow to Restart Your Pool After Active Winterization
#1 – If you have an automatic cover, start by opening it and ⟨strong⟩clean the slats⟨/strong⟩ with a water jet. Avoid using a high-pressure cleaner to not risk damaging the slats. This precaution is essential to guarantee the durability and proper functioning of your automatic cover.
#2 – ⟨strong⟩Restart the filtration⟨/strong⟩, turn it on and perform a ⟨strong⟩backwash⟨/strong⟩ of the sand filter. This will remove the dirt accumulated during the non-use period and optimize the efficiency of your filtration system.
#3 – If your filter is a diatomaceous earth filter, open it and remove the grids ⟨strong⟩to clean them with a water jet⟨/strong⟩. After putting them back in place, ⟨strong⟩close the filter and recharge it⟨/strong⟩ with DE according to the instructions on the label, taking into account the size of the filter. Following these steps will ensure optimal operation of your filtration system.
#4 – To improve water cleaning, ⟨strong⟩adjust the filtration time⟨/strong⟩ on the programming clock by dividing it by two relative to the water temperature. This decision will allow the filtration to be effectively adapted to your pool’s needs, taking into account seasonal temperature fluctuations.
🛟 ⟨strong⟩Number of filtration hours⟨/strong⟩ = water temperature / 2
#5 – Remember to ⟨strong⟩check the TA (alkalinity)⟨/strong⟩ of the water, which should be between ⟨strong⟩60 and 80 ppm⟨/strong⟩. A well-regulated TA helps to ⟨strong⟩stabilize the pH⟨/strong⟩ of your pool, thus avoiding undesirable variations.
#6 – Next, ⟨strong⟩adjust the pH level⟨/strong⟩ of your pool. It is essential to note that snow and rainwater can acidify the water, which can disrupt the ⟨strong⟩chemical balance⟨/strong⟩ of your basin.
#7 – Also make sure to ⟨strong⟩add salt⟨/strong⟩ if your pool is equipped with a salt chlorinator. Each chlorinator has specific needs, so consult your device’s user manual to find out the quantity required for its proper operation.
#8
– Once the water parameters are set, proceed with ⟨strong⟩shock chlorination⟨/strong⟩, except for pools treated with BIGUANIDE (PHMB) or active oxygen. It is essential to emphasize that during this process, all ⟨strong⟩automatic treatment devices must be turned off⟨/strong⟩ in order to ensure the effectiveness of the procedure.
#9 – After 48 hours of shock chlorination, you can ⟨strong⟩start a regular treatment⟨/strong⟩. You have the choice between using long-lasting ⟨strong⟩chlorine tablets⟨/strong⟩ or reactivating your ⟨strong⟩automatic disinfection system⟨/strong⟩ (such as electrolysis, redox regulator, UV lamp, or even copper/silver treatment).
⟨strong⟩⚠️ Warning:⟨/strong⟩ only turn on your chlorinator when the pool water temperature exceeds 15 °C. Otherwise, there is a risk of seriously damaging your device’s cell.
#10 – For automatic pH regulation systems, start by ⟨strong⟩calibrating the probe⟨/strong⟩ following the recommendations given in the device manual. If an error occurs during this step, first check the probe connection. If it is correctly connected and the error persists, it is possible that the probe needs to be ⟨strong⟩replaced⟨/strong⟩.
#11 – Also ensure the ⟨strong⟩quantity of corrective product⟨/strong⟩ remaining in your pH container or tank. This will guarantee that you have a sufficient reserve to ⟨strong⟩maintain the pH balance⟨/strong⟩ of your pool.
#12 – To ⟨strong⟩disinfect the water line⟨/strong⟩, use an appropriate product like Aquaclean, which is recommended for this operation. Don’t forget to follow the instructions provided with the product to obtain the best results.
