Many swimming pool owners equipped with manual covers are now wondering about the possibility of motorizing their existing installation. Whether to gain ease of use, security, or energy efficiency, the modernization of a manual roller cover is not only possible but often highly relevant. Why switch to a motorized cover?

Motorized pool covers provide several immediate benefits:

Ease of use: effortless opening and closing, often via a simple button or a remote control.
Increased safety: motorized systems generally include limit switches, electrical safety features, and can be coupled with alarms.
Better pool protection: by automating the closing process, oversights are reduced, which improves safety and limits evaporation.

Motorizing an old cover: in which cases is it possible?

In the majority of cases, yes, it is possible to automate an old manual cover, provided that certain conditions are met:

Cover in good condition: the slat curtain and the axle must be functional, without excessive deformation.
Sufficient access to the axle: to be able to integrate a tubular motor.
Compatible structure: particularly for above-ground covers, where adding a motorized support or a motorized axle is conceivable without major work.
Electrical power supply available nearby: to connect the motor to a control box.

What are the technical solutions?

Several options exist depending on the type of above-ground cover:

Adding a motorized unit (on stands), often delivered with a remote control.
Replacing the existing axle with a complete motorized axle, depending on the dimensions.

The NF P90-308 standard on pool safety devices requires that any motorized roller cover complies with strict criteria. Adding a motor does not waive these obligations: the limit switch system, the resistance to lifting, and the full closure of the pool must be compliant.
