Cleaning your pool – Tips and Tricks for successful cleaning
With the arrival of sunny summer days, it is a real pleasure to be able to swim in your pool at any time without being bothered by leaves or insects floating on the surface.
To help you better understand how to clean your pool, we are writing this article today. You will first discover the importance of an adequate filtration system, and then we will explain three different methods for eliminating impurities that this system cannot suck up.
The importance of high-performance filtration
Before thinking about manually cleaning your pool, it is essential to check that the filtration system is operating correctly.
This closed circuit generally sucks water through the main drain and skimmers, passes it through one or more filters before sending it back into the basin.
Various filtration systems exist, each with its advantages and disadvantages, which we will discuss in a future article. Nevertheless, it is important to note that filtration efficiency also depends on the proper maintenance of your pool pump and its correct use.
Thus, during the summer, do not forget to run your filtration for at least 8 hours a day and to clean the filter regularly, especially if your pool is located near trees.
If your filtration system is in good condition and you use it seriously, we can now move on to the cleaning phase.

Manual cleaning
The simplest methods are not necessarily the least effective, and it is good to know that manual cleaning proves very useful as a complement to an automatic cleaning system.
To manually clean your pool, you will need three simple but essential accessories:
- A leaf net
- A pool broom
- A brush
Using the leaf net to remove debris
The first step consists of gathering floating debris and those at the bottom of the pool with a leaf net. By performing this task regularly, although sometimes tiring, you will save not only energy for your pump but also maintenance products by limiting the formation of algae.
Scrubbing the bottom of your basin
It is frequent that filtration fails to suck up all debris, as some settle on the bottom of the pool, thus favoring the proliferation of unwanted microorganisms.
To facilitate the work of your pump, you can use a pool brush to dislodge dirt by pushing it toward the main drain and/or your leaf net.
Cleaning the waterline
The waterline is also a difficult area to reach, and only the best pool robots succeed in cleaning this part effectively.
However, this is where dirt often ends up, particularly in corners, in addition to the accumulation of scale.
To avoid this, simply perform a small cleaning from time to time with a thick brush along the waterline. In case of significant deposits, do not hesitate to use a little detergent.
It is important to perform this operation carefully, especially for above-ground pools or liners, which are more sensitive.

The suction pool cleaner
Obviously, these tasks require a certain physical effort, and relying solely on manual cleaning can take a lot of time, especially in large private pools.
To simplify this chore without spending considerable sums, there is the pool vacuum, which sits between the robot and the manual broom.
This cleaning device looks almost like a broom, but it has a long hose that connects directly to the pool’s filtration system. This allows you to optimize the efficiency of your manual cleaning.
It is important to note that to be effective, this type of cleaning still requires a bit of patience, as it is preferable to clean the basin slowly in order to avoid “stirring up” the dirt at the bottom and making it rise.
The automatic pool robot
To conclude this guide on properly cleaning your pool, we present the most popular solution currently available, for multiple reasons: the pool robot.
Once considered too expensive, robotic cleaners are now increasingly affordable on the market, and there are finally interesting models for all budgets and all requirements.
A pool robot is designed to cover the entire pool and vacuum up dirt. Entry-level robots, such as suction-side cleaners, generally settle for cleaning the bottom of the pool, just like a manual brush. However, these robots operate completely autonomously, and the best among them will not miss a single inch of the floor.
However, if you want your robot to also clean the walls and be ultra-autonomous, you will need to turn to slightly more expensive models: electric pool robots. True “smart vacuums,” these devices can adapt to the shape of the pool for a complete cleaning, including the waterline!

How to clean your pool: the verdict!
Cleaning a pool can take more or less time, but you have surely understood that it is an essential task to guarantee your swimming comfort. We increasingly advise our clients to combine frequent automatic cleaning with manual cleaning about twice a month.
In fact, human intervention allows for precise monitoring of your pool’s condition, while a robot will be perfectly capable of taking care of the main cleaning tasks while you enjoy a relaxing moment in the sun!
