Pool filter backwashing: guide
How to backwash a filter
Here is how to backwash a filter. You should perform this operation if the pressure gauge shows high pressure, meaning the needle is in the orange or red zone.
Sand filter backwash guide
Backwashing is a crucial maintenance step for pool filtration systems equipped with a sand filter. This method allows you to clean the sand by reversing the flow of water through the filter, removing accumulated dirt and impurities. Here are the precise steps to follow for backwashing a sand filter:
- Turn off the filtration pump
: Before starting, stop the filtration pump to ensure safety and avoid damaging the system. - Open the waste valve
: This step allows you to channel the dirty water to the drain or an appropriate location to empty the water during backwashing. - Set the multiport valve to the “Backwash” position
: The multiport valve is a mechanism that helps control the water flow in the filtration system. Change the valve position to “Backwash” to reverse the water current through the sand filter. - Run the pump for one minute
: Turn on the pump to send water in the opposite direction through the filter, lifting and cleaning the sand. Keep the pump active for about one minute. - Stop the pool pump
: Turn off the pump once the time has elapsed. - Set the multiport valve to the “Rinse” position
: Change the valve to “Rinse” to restore normal water flow through the sand filter and eliminate the final traces of dirt. - Run the pump for one minute
: Turn on the pump to rinse the filter and stabilize the sand. Let the pump run for about one minute. - Stop the pool pump
Turn off the pump once the time has elapsed. - Close the waste valve
: Close the valve to end the water evacuation. - Reposition the multiport valve to “Filtration”
: Set the valve back to “Filtration” to return the system to its usual filtration mode. - Restart the pool pump
: Reactivate the pump to continue filtering the pool water.
After completing this procedure, check the position of your filter’s pressure gauge needle. If the needle returns to the green zone, it indicates your sand filter is clean and functioning correctly. However, if the needle remains in the red zone, it could signal an issue with the filter, such as an still-clogged filter, sand saturated with calcium, or a faulty pressure gauge.
In case of a problem with a device, it is recommended to consult an expert to evaluate and correct the situation.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filter backwash guide
Backwashing a DE filter is a crucial step for the proper operation and maintenance of the pool. This process removes debris and dirt accumulated in the filter, ensuring adequate water circulation while maintaining its cleanliness. Here is a detailed guide for backwashing a DE filter:
- Turn off the pool pump
: Before starting the backwash, make sure to turn off the pool pump. This ensures safety and prevents potential damage. - Position the multiport valve
: Set the filter’s multiport valve (if available) to the “Backwash” position. This manipulation reverses the flow of water through the filter, allowing the diatomaceous earth and impurities to be cleaned out. - Restart the pump
: Turn the pump back on and let the water flow backwards through the filter for about 2 to 3 minutes. You should observe dirty water flowing out of the backwash pipe. - Stop the pump and switch to rinse mode
: Turn the pump off again and set the multiport valve to the “Rinse” position. This step facilitates the cleaning of remaining DE residue and debris. - Turn the pump back on for rinsing
: Turn the pump on and let the water circulate for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Then, turn off the pump. - Repeat steps 3 to 5 if necessary
: If needed, repeat the backwash and rinse steps until the water coming out of the backwash pipe is clear. - Return the valve to the “Filtration” position
: After completing the backwash, reposition the multiport valve to “Filtration” to restore normal water circulation in the filter. - Restart the pump
: Turn the pump back on to re-establish water circulation through the filter. - Replenish the filter with DE powder
: Following a backwash, it is essential to replenish the filter with diatomaceous earth (DE) powder. To do this, add the required amount of DE powder into the pool skimmer while the pump is running. The powder will be suctioned in and deposit onto the filter grids, allowing for effective filtration.
Monitor the filter pressure: After backwashing and recharging the filter, check the filter pressure to ensure it has returned to normal levels.
