The pool cover: an effective safety tool, but under certain conditions

A pool is a true aesthetic and practical asset in a garden. In summer, it becomes the ideal place to cool off and enjoy the sunny days. But a swimming pool, especially if it is inground, also represents an accident risk. This is why the law mandates appropriate safety devices. Among them, ⟨a href=”https://www.coverdeau.com/volet-roulant-hors-sol-automatique-totem/”⟩the pool cover⟨/a⟩ stands out as a solution that is both elegant, robust, and practical. Custom-made, it adapts to the majority of inground pools and constitutes an effective barrier against the risks of drowning… provided it is used correctly.

Swimming pools and drownings: a real risk

The numbers speak for themselves. Between June 1st and August 31st, 2021, 1,983 drownings were recorded in France, including 1,119 documented accidental drownings and 250 deaths (22%).
According to Santé Publique France, young children are the most vulnerable: in 2018, nearly three-quarters of drownings in private pools involved children under 6 years old. Even worse, 45% of fatal drownings in family pools involved this age group.

Faced with these alarming observations, French legislation has mandated the installation of a safety system for all private inground pools since 2003. Authorized devices must meet specific standards:

The pool roller shutter belongs to the category of safety covers.

Human vigilance remains essential

Although the pool cover is certified and complies with regulations, it only protects under certain conditions: it must be fully closed. If the pool remains uncovered, even partially, the risk remains identical. This is why adult supervision is irreplaceable as soon as a child is nearby.

Some essential rules apply:Drowning Risk

  • Never leave a child alone near a swimming pool,
  • Equip the youngest children with appropriate armbands, rings, or floating swimsuits,
  • Learn to swim as early as possible,
  • Keep a pole, a ring, and a phone within reach,
  • Do not leave toys floating in the water, as they irresistibly attract children.

The limits of the roller shutter without an alarm:

Contrary to what one might think, the pool cover does not totally eliminate risks. It is an effective device only if the pool is covered and locked.Alarm

  • Finally, even when closed, vigilance is still required: manufacturers emphasize the need to visually check the complete closure of the cover.

The NF P90-308 standard: a guarantee of safety

The pool cover must strictly comply with the NF P90-308 standard to be considered compliant. This notably mandates:standard

  1. The impossibility for a child under 5 years old to become immersed under the cover.
  2. Resistance to a load of 100 kg without tearing.
  3. The absence of risk of cutting, puncture, or strangulation.
  4. A floor anchoring system that cannot be lifted by more than 10 cm.
  5. Fasteners not exceeding 25 mm.
  6. A secure control inaccessible to children (key not visible, button above 1.25 m, constant pressure required for closure).
  7. The control located near the pool to allow for full visual monitoring.
  8. Delivery of a certificate of compliance upon purchase.

Conclusion: a useful tool, but not infallible

The pool cover is an aesthetic and practical piece of equipment, which brings real safety to the pool. It is one of the devices certified by law and meets strict standards. But its effectiveness depends entirely on its use: it only protects if the pool is covered.

In short, if you are away, the cover must always be closed, unless your installation is paired with an alarm specifically intended for this type of cover. And above all, nothing replaces vigilance
