Pool too full: causes and solutions

Full pool / overflowing rainA frequent question among pool owners is whether rainwater can cause an overflow. In reality, this depends on both the amount of rain and the capacity of the basin. Various solutions exist, depending on your equipment, which we will explore in this article…

How to evaluate the optimal water level?

To determine the appropriate water level for your pool, you can use the skimmers as a reference point. These elements play an essential role in the filtration system, sucking water from the surface with a pump to filter it afterwards. For a traditional inground pool, the ideal water level is located about ¾ of the way up the skimmers, thus ensuring optimal operation of the filtration system. With this configuration, the water should not reach the edges of the pool, except for overflow or mirror pools, which regulate themselves automatically thanks to their design. Thus, the skimmer becomes a valuable measuring tool for determining the perfect water level in your basin.

What to do in case of overflow?

To prevent your pool from overflowing, especially during heavy rains, you can install a level regulator. Combined with an overflow outlet, this equipment effectively controls overflowing water thanks to a drainage system located near the skimmer. In practice, this assembly consists of a channel and a pipe that connects to a sewer system or another means of wastewater disposal. Thus, when the water level exceeds a certain threshold, the excess is easily drained away.

Awareness and vigilance: identifying potential risks

During heavy rainfall, the water level in your pool can rise quickly. However, there is no need to panic! If you estimate that the surplus is moderate, damage will remain limited, and time and the environment should allow for a gradual return to normal. Do not forget the principle of Archimedes’ thrust: an occasional overflow generally only causes minor inconveniences, whereas an empty basin can suffer significant damage.

Depending on where you live, you will experience more or less hot and sunny summers, which can lead to increased water evaporation. In this case, it is advisable to regularly monitor the level of your pool and add water if necessary. Do not always wait for the rain to arrive to readjust the level, as bad weather can cause various problems, such as an unbalanced pH or rapid cooling of the water.
