Swimming pool maintenance: how much does it cost?
How much does it cost to maintain a swimming pool?
Once built, a swimming pool generates ongoing expenses and requires appropriate upkeep. The more it is used, the more frequent cleaning needs to be, and proper maintenance is essential. Here is an overview of the costs associated with pool maintenance.
Filling a swimming pool
Water represents the main expense when purchasing a pool, and the initial filling is the most expensive. Generally, 1,000 liters of water are needed per cubic meter. For a standard size pool of 10 m long, 5 m wide, and 2 m deep—a volume of 100 m3—you will need 100,000 liters of water for the first filling.
The cost of water varies by municipality, ranging between €2.50 and €8 per m3. On average, the price per cubic meter is €3 in France. This means you will need to spend about €300 for the initial filling of the pool.
Subsequently, it becomes rare to perform complete refills, especially if the pool is correctly maintained. On average, you will need to add between 15 and 20 m3 of water per year, for a budget of approximately €45 to €60 per year.
To manage the cost of the initial filling and the pool, it may be wise to take out a loan from an online bank. Indeed, their digital services often offer more competitive rates. Doing a comparison of online banks allows you to quickly get an overview of the different offers available.

Energy consumption of the pool
A pool also consumes electricity to run the filtration system, a cost that should not be overlooked. Depending on the power of the filter and the existing installations in the home, it might be necessary to opt for a three-phase meter or to increase the power capacity to ensure an adequate electrical supply.
The filtration system runs between 10 and 15 hours a day for about 6 months.
12 hours x 30 days x 6 months = 2,160 hours
This represents 2,160 additional hours of electricity. At a rate of 0.75 kW per hour and with a price of 15 euro cents, you should budget about €243 per year for the pool’s electricity. However, choosing an alternative electricity supplier that offers lower prices per kilowatt-hour can help reduce the bill. One of them, the supplier Leclerc Énergie, allows you, for example, to credit part of your consumption to the Leclerc loyalty card and obtain vouchers. This is an interesting option, especially if you want to extend the swimming season while increasing your purchasing power.
Products and maintenance equipment for your pool
To maintain clear and crystal-clear water, a pool must stay clean. It is important to treat the water…
and maintain your pool well. Water treatment can be done with salt, bromine, or chlorine.
The type of product chosen will influence the maintenance bill:
For chlorine, expect a budget of €200 to €250 per year;
Bromine is the most expensive treatment: between €240 and €280 per year. However, it is not accepted in all countries;
Salt treatment is the least expensive, ranging between €150 and €200 per year, and it is also the least polluting method.
It is also important to add the water pH test kit, flocculants, anti-limescale products, and those for balancing the pH.
To make maintaining your pool easier, you can also invest in a robotic pool cleaner. These devices allow for significant savings on chemicals in the long term and save you time, allowing you to fully enjoy your pool during sunny days.
