Comment bien entretenir ses margelles de piscine ?

How to properly maintain your pool coping

⟨1/⟩When you own a pool, the focus is mostly on maintaining the water and the pool itself. However, it is crucial not to neglect the maintenance of its environment, which is often exposed to elements that can damage it.

When should you clean the coping?

It is recommended to clean them as soon as it becomes necessary (when stains, dirt, or moss appear) while keeping in mind that each type of material has specific maintenance requirements. After winter, coping stones can be particularly dirty and then require a powerful high-pressure cleaning.

For wooden coping, ⟨2⟩semi-annual maintenance⟨/2⟩ is advised. In addition, it is preferable to avoid cleaning stone coping when temperatures are high due to the risk of burns.

It is essential to avoid using slippery products for safety reasons.

Maintenance tips for wooden coping

Wood is the most commonly chosen material for coping, because of its warm and friendly appearance that integrates harmoniously into the garden. Its maintenance remains relatively simple. It is important to preserve the radiance of wooden coping to prevent them from turning gray. Start with a water jet, then apply ⟨3⟩wood-specific products.⟨/3⟩

First use a wood brightener which eliminates impurities and restores radiance by scrubbing with a non-metallic brush so as not to damage the wood, then rinse again. After drying, the application of a saturator will protect the wood from the effects of the sun and fading.

It is ⟨4⟩not recommended to apply varnish⟨/4⟩ because it prevents the wood from breathing.

Maintenance tips for stone coping

Stone is also widely appreciated by pool owners. Its maintenance is similar, whether it is natural or made from minerals and concrete.

Maintaining stone is also quite easy. It is advisable to clean it regularly ⟨5⟩with a product suitable for floors or simply soapy water.⟨/5⟩

For more stubborn stains, a high-pressure cleaner is very effective. It is however important not to exceed 20 bars and to maintain a distance of at least 10 meters from the stone coping. Depending on the needs, one can resort to anti-rust products or diluted bleach to treat small stains.

In addition, one can apply waterproofing products in the spring, antifungal treatments to prevent problems, as well as non-slip products for optimal maintenance.

⟨6⟩Avoid using acidic products⟨/6⟩, as these can damage the stone.

Maintenance tips for composite coping

Although less aesthetic than wooden coping, composite coping (polyethylene, PVC) are ⟨7⟩the easiest to maintain⟨/7⟩. Simple regular maintenance with water and cleaning products is sufficient. The use of a high-pressure cleaner should be avoided. You will thus have a pool surround that is always clean and in excellent condition!
