It is often with the arrival of sunny days that the desire to swim manifests itself. However, the construction of a swimming pool requires time and several steps. The ideal period to carry out your pool project does not always coincide with your immediate desire to dive in. Here are some tips to be prepared and fully enjoy your new pool during the summer.

When to start constructing your swimming pool?

It is essential to plan in order to go through the design and construction phase as peacefully as possible, without delays disrupting your summer. For this, several elements must be considered that will help determine the opportune moment for launching the work and estimate the completion time for construction.

Professional availability

Industry specialists see an increase in pool construction requests before and during the summer. Therefore, it is preferable to contact them during autumn or winter, periods when demand is lower. They will then be better able to examine your situation and give you more time. Furthermore, they will be better equipped to follow the various phases of the construction site off-season and might even be inclined to offer you a reduced rate at that time.

Main elements influencing your decision

• The climate: weather and your geographic location play a crucial role in the pool construction process, as rain, snow, and especially frost can lead to delays during earthwork and construction. Autumn is generally considered the ideal period, as groundwater levels are lower and the soil is softer. However, a qualified pool builder often has additives to work year-round. It is helpful to know that installing a liner requires a temperature above 12 °C to preserve its elasticity.
• The type of pool: deadlines to complete your project will vary depending on whether you choose an in-ground or above-ground pool, or whether you opt for a kit or masonry model. For an in-ground pool, you should allow at least two months to file the prior declaration of work or apply for a building permit, not counting the time for earthwork and concrete drying. It is therefore advised to start the process a year in advance! Shell or kit pools require shorter timeframes and a few months should be enough to complete your project. Above-ground pools are the fastest to install and can even be considered at the end of spring: no specific procedures are required, you can proceed with the installation yourself if the model is simple, although slightly long delivery times can cause a wait.

Deadlines to anticipate

• If you choose an in-ground pool, administrative procedures will need to be carried out: you must apply for a building permit at the town hall for any covered pool project, as well as for any uncovered pool over 100m². This involves filling out the cerfa form n°13406*03 and providing an implementation plan for your pool with dimensions. The timeframe for obtaining this permit is approximately three months.
