Pool pH, TH, and TAC levels: a guide
pH, TH, and TAC levels for swimming pools
Your pool water is constantly evolving. Every user must take care to regularly check the pH, TH, and TAC levels. These three elements are crucial for maintaining water balance.
Through this guide, we will direct you to become an expert in analyzing your water!

The pH: Potential of Hydrogen
The pH has a direct impact on the clarity of your water. The neutral level for water at 20° is set at 7.0 (the scale goes from 0 to 14, ranging from very acidic to very alkaline).
What should the pH of my pool be?
The ideal pH of your pool is between 7.2 and 7.4.
How to monitor the pH of my pool?
It is essential to check the pH of your pool regularly, at least once a week, using an analysis kit or an electronic pH measuring device.
Why is it important to check the pH of my pool?
The quality of your water is a key factor for your comfort during swimming. A pH that is too high or too low can diminish your enjoyment. Additionally, certain devices, such as cleaning robots, will only operate effectively if the pH is balanced.
- If the pH is below 7.2: your water is acidic. This can cause skin and eye irritation. It is recommended to add pH + to your pool.
- If the pH is above 7.6: your water is alkaline. In this case, your pool risk becoming cloudy and prone to algae growth. It is advised to add pH – to your basin.
Important: a high pH promotes scale buildup on the walls and can damage the filtration system. Furthermore, a pH that is too high reduces the effectiveness of disinfection products.
🛟 Note: The quantities of product to add vary by manufacturer. Please consult the instructions for the product being used.
Can the pH of my pool be regulated automatically?
Indeed, it is increasingly common to use a pH regulator, which continuously monitors the pH level of your water and adjusts it automatically if necessary. This method significantly simplifies your pool maintenance by automating an often repetitive task.
The TH: Total Hardness
The TH (hydrotimetric titer) indicates the concentration of calcium and magnesium salts. It allows for the evaluation of water hardness (it is an indicator of mineralization) and is expressed in French degrees (°f).
What should the TH of my pool be?
The TH of your pool should be between 10°f and 20°f.
Why monitor the TH of my pool?
Just like…
The pH and TH level are crucial for obtaining optimal water quality.
- Below 10°f: your pool water is very soft. Be careful, as this means the water can be corrosive to metal elements.
- Above 30°f: the water is classified as hard. Hard water contains a lot of calcium and magnesium, which can cause scale deposits on the pool walls. However, it is not harmful to health.
The TAC: Total Alkalinity
The TAC measures the amount of bicarbonate and carbonate in your pool water. This determines the water’s ability to resist pH variations (buffering capacity) and is also expressed in French degrees (°f). The higher the TAC, the more stable the pH remains (reinforced buffering capacity), meaning that adding an acidic product to the pool will not cause a change in pH.
What should the TAC level of my pool be?
The TAC of your pool should be between 10°f and 30°f.
Why monitor the TAC of my pool?
External conditions also have an impact on the quality of your water. For example, rain or fluctuations in atmospheric pressure can affect your pH level if your TAC is insufficient.
- Below 10°f: your pool water does not have adequate buffering capacity, which will make your pH very unstable. To increase the TAC of your pool, add sodium bicarbonate.
Warning: increasing the TAC will also cause the pH to rise. - Above 30°f: whitish deposits might appear on the water’s surface, and it will then be difficult to modify the pH level. To reduce the TAC of your pool, add an acid.
Warning: decreasing the TAC leads to a drop in pH. If the pH becomes too low, you will then need to add a basic solution.
