Overview of mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are often considered the deadliest creatures on our planet. These insects transmit diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue and Zika, thus leading to many human casualties.

It is mainly the females that bite in order to absorb proteins necessary for egg production. These proteins are found in the blood of hosts, which can be humans, vertebrates or other mammals.

During the bite, the mosquito injects its saliva before sucking the blood of its prey in order to facilitate this process. It is this saliva, and not the bite itself, that causes itching and the appearance of bumps.

The various types of mosquitoes

The Tiger mosquito

Coming from Southeast Asia, the tiger mosquito is present in 100 countries and stands out as the most aggressive mosquito species. This insect bites both day and night and can infect a person using the saliva left on the previous victim.
It is capable of transmitting diseases like chikungunya, dengue and the Zika virus.

How to identify a tiger mosquito? On the physical side, it has black and white stripes on its body and a tapered abdomen. Its size is about 5 millimeters.

The common mosquito or “Culex”

This is the most widespread mosquito in metropolitan France and the northern hemisphere. This type of mosquito is known for the transmission of West Nile fever and avian malaria.

How to distinguish it? Its size varies between 4 and 10 millimeters, and its palps are pointed upwards.
We will address effective methods to combat these two species later.

Mosquito bites?

Bites cause an inflammatory reaction, manifesting as a raised redness. This causes itching that can last for several days.

Allergic reactions can also occur, leading to inflammation of the bitten limb and swelling of that area.

People with scented skin (like those who sweat a lot, have a fever, or baby skin) attract more mosquitoes. Additionally, individuals with blood type O have more than an 80% chance of being bitten compared to other blood groups.

How to keep mosquitoes away?

In public places ☀️:

It is recommended to keep a repellent handy and apply it to exposed parts of the body (arms, legs, feet, back…) during your outings. With this, you will avoid the discomfort caused by these insects.

In private places 🏠:

It is advisable to obtain mosquito repellents, such as those mentioned previously. Their function is to attract mosquitoes inside or near the trap, in order to eliminate them.
By placing a mosquito trap in your garden, you will enjoy a peaceful environment. In summer, you can thus have your meals on the terrace or swim in the pool while relaxing in the sun, without being disturbed by these insects.

It is crucial to position the trap in areas frequented by mosquitoes.
Their main enemy is dehydration, and they especially fear the sun and the wind. They therefore seek refuge in shaded and damp places in your garden; these are therefore the areas that should be targeted for the installation of traps.
