Active or passive pool winterizing: which one to choose?
Pool winterizing: active or passive?
⟨1/⟩Preparing the pool for winter is crucial, especially when the water temperature drops below 12°C for a prolonged period. This winterizing process allows you to effectively protect your equipment against freezing. It also facilitates the restart of the pool in the spring. You can choose between two methods of winterizing: passive or active.
⟨2⟩What is passive winterizing?⟨/2⟩
Passive winterizing involves a complete shutdown of the pool’s activity. It is somewhat of a “standby” mode for the basin. The filtration circuit is entirely drained, which prevents water from stagnating and affecting the materials during freezing. If you choose this type of winterizing, it is imperative to cover your pool to prevent rainwater from rising to the level of the skimmers.
Passive winterizing is essential if you live in a region where frost is frequent in winter. It is the ideal solution for secondary residences. One of the advantages of this method is that you won’t have to worry about your pool throughout the winter. On the other hand, it can be long and laborious. Re-starting will also be more complicated, requiring a major clean-up during the spring.
⟨3⟩What is active winterizing?⟨/3⟩
Active winterizing involves a reduction in the pool’s activity. With this method, the filtration system runs at a low rate, about 2 to 3 hours per day. The goal is to keep the water in motion in the pump and conduits to avoid freezing. If you opt for this method, the use of a cover is not mandatory, although it is highly recommended. As with the passive method, active winterizing must begin as soon as the water drops below 12°C.
This winterizing is suitable if you live in a region with a temperate climate, where frost periods are short. The advantage of this method is its simplicity of implementation. Furthermore, the water quality is maintained. Additionally, you protect your pump from a risk of seizing that can occur with long inactivity. Re-starting is also easier and less expensive than after passive winterizing.
However, this method involves a few disadvantages that are important to consider before making your choice. Unlike passive winterizing, you will need to monitor your pool throughout the winter, especially during periods of frost. You will need to ensure that the filtration system is operating correctly. Sometimes, it is also necessary to add winterizing products or anti-limescale products to prevent the degradation of your equipment. If you prefer to avoid these tasks, it is advisable to install an anti-frost system that triggers when the temperature is likely to harm the filtration circuit. If you have not covered your pool, you will also need to perform regular cleaning work.
