Pool cover and electrolysis, combining them properly
Salt-based electrolysis requires a specific installation to prevent your pool cover from suffering corrosion or overchlorination. This guide presents our recommendations for combining the use of a pool cover and an electrolyzer.
The dangers of electrolysis for a pool cover
Using an electrolyzer in conjunction with a cover can create risks of water overchlorination as well as corrosion of your equipment. These problems can be serious and significantly damage your installation. Overchlorination damages the cover slats by exposing them to high chlorine levels, which can make them brittle in the medium term.
The electrochemical process of the electrolyzer causes corrosion of all metal parts submerged in the pool. The cover can rust and, in the short term, stop working. Sometimes, this phenomenon can also disrupt your filtration system.
How to install a cover when using electrolysis
Salt electrolysis requires an electrolysis cell that converts salt into chlorine. The sun’s ultraviolet rays, which help break down active chlorine by reconverting it into salt, can no longer come into contact with the water, which can cause overchlorination.
Install a grounding system
An electrolyzer generates an electric current to produce chlorine, which is why rust problems can occur on your equipment.
We always recommend, from the installation of an electrolysis treatment system or a cover in a saltwater pool, to perform grounding.
A grounding system protects the pool’s metal parts against wear and corrosion. An electrolyzer is a water treatment device that produces chlorine from salt dissolved in pool water, through an electrochemical process.
Connect the electrolyzer with a dry contact
Each pool cover is supplied with a dry contact, which allows you to start or stop the electrolyzer. When the cover is closed, the electrolyzer is deactivated. When the cover is open, the electrolyzer activates.
Using a dry contact to manage the electrolyzer helps prevent overchlorination but may, on the other hand, unbalance the water if the cover remains closed too long.
Install a RedOx controller
Regardless of the opening and closing of the cover, a RedOx controller constantly checks the chlorine level and activates the electrolyzer only to adjust this level. Your electrolyzer operates autonomously, which saves you from checking the water balance, even in your absence. A simple button allows the device to automatically regulate chlorine production according to actual need.
