Pool damage: what compensation is possible?

sinistre

Pool equipment, although designed to withstand outdoor use, remains vulnerable to severe weather: thunderstorms, strong winds, floods, or lightning. These weather events can cause significant damage to roller shutters, filtration pumps, electrical control panels, automation systems, and even the structure of the pool. In this context, many questions arise: am I covered? What steps should I take? Which components will be covered?

What types of damage are concerned?

Weather-related losses generally fall into three categories:

Electrical damage: power surges caused by lightning leading to the destruction of motors, control panels, or automation systems (shutter, pump, salt chlorinator, regulation).

Mechanical damage: shutter slats damaged by a falling tree, slats torn away by high winds, displaced duckboarding, bent shaft.

Infiltration and flooding: control panel flooded by rising water, submerged motor line, short circuit caused by moisture in a dry conduit.

In all these cases, partial or complete replacement of the equipment is often necessary, with costs that can be significant.

Home insurance: which guarantees come into play?

In most cases, it is your comprehensive home insurance (MRH) that covers weather-related losses, provided that the pool and its equipment are clearly declared in the contract. Two main guarantees may apply:

Climatic events guarantee: it covers damage caused by wind, heavy rain, or snow. It generally covers repairs or replacements of damaged outdoor elements, subject to certain conditions (for example, winds exceeding 100 km/h recorded by Météo France).

Electrical damage guarantee: it concerns surges due to lightning or network malfunctions. This guarantee is essential for obtaining compensation for a fried shutter motor, control panel, or pump.

In some cases, a specific “pool” guarantee can be added to your contract to cover elements like the liner, the pool structure, or peripheral equipment (roller shutter, technical room, robot, etc.).

Deductible, depreciation, and ceiling: the limits to know

Compensation is always subject to certain contractual rules:

– A deductible systematically applies, often between €150 and €500 depending on the contract.

Depreciation is deducted from the reimbursed amount: a motor or pump older than 5 years may only be partially compensated.

– A compensation ceiling may be established for certain types of equipment, especially if they have not been declared or valued in the contract.

It is therefore essential to check the declared value of your equipment with your insurer, and to keep all purchase and installation invoices.

Procedure to follow in case of a claim

  1. Report the claim within 5 working days (or 10 in case of a natural disaster) to your insurer, by phone or via your customer portal.
  2. Take photos of the damage immediately, without moving the damaged elements.
  3. Have a technical diagnosis established by a professional (such as Coverdeau), who can provide an expert report and a precise quote.
  4. In case of doubt about the cause of the damage (surge, infiltration, mechanical breakage), do not attempt immediate repair without the insurance company’s agreement.
  5. If your contract provides for it, an appointed expert by the insurance company may come to assess the damage before validating the claim.

What if a natural disaster is recognized?

When weather conditions are particularly severe, the State may recognize the event as a natural disaster through a decree published in the Journal Officiel. In this case, the damage suffered, even indirect, can be subject to enhanced compensation (capped deductible, expansion of coverage). The decree must be mentioned when reporting to the insurance company.
