How to replace an immersed / above-ground motor with a COVEO motor?

Have you just purchased a new SIREM COVEO motor? This article details how to safely change your old MIS (immersed) or MH2 (above-ground) motor.

The Coveo range offers equivalent performance, with equal or higher maximum torque and similar speeds. It is also compatible with existing power supply boxes, although a software update for MIS boxes, with or without PLC, may be required. However, certain mounting and wiring rules must be followed, as detailed below.

For above-ground motors

The motors are powered by 12VDC and should be replaced as follows (the SIREM 12VDC power supply boxes do not need to be changed):

The MH2 motors are equipped with a 16 mm square shaft, directly attached to the motor. This shaft generally fits into a rectangular tube, with a 16 mm square hole passing through the tube wall.

With the Coveo, it's different: the attachment (shaft, flange, or yoke) is free-pivoting. This means that when the cover exerts force, the support tube undergoes bending, unlike the MH2 where the force is simply vertical. The result? The tube can deform, and a simple 16 mm square shaft is not enough.

The solution? A more robust attachment! The above-ground Coveo comes with a U-flange, which is securely attached to the tube via 4 holes (threaded or with a reinforcement plate inside to tighten well with nuts). And to prevent any loosening, Nylstop nuts are recommended.

Adapting the U-flange causes a shift in the positioning of the cover

Steps to replace an above-ground motor

① Re-drill the rectangular support post to fit the new U-flange,
② Re-drill the customer tube because the center distance between the front bearing and the rear bearing of the drive is not the same as on the MH2 (drilling template needs to be redone),
③ Check if it is necessary on the other side of the pool to push in or pull out the telescopic shaft of the bearing,
④ Check if it is necessary to shift the straps on the shaft (to find the same central position of the slat cover relative to the pool walls),
⑤ Unlike the MH2, the INI button must be wired.

For immersed motors

The motors are powered by 24VDC and should be replaced as follows:

When changing the drive, a software update for the control boxes is recommended to adapt to the Coveo's lap counting system. Without this modification, the motor will still function, but the limit switches may gradually shift. The result? After a few months, a manual reset by the user might be necessary.

Replacement steps for immersed motor

① Validate the choice of a similar shaft or yoke
② Re-drill the customer tube because the center distance between the front bearing and the rear bearing of the drive is not the same as on the MH2 (drilling template needs to be redone).
③ Check if it is necessary on the other side of the pool to push in or pull out the telescopic shaft of the bearing,
④ Check if it is necessary to shift the straps on the shaft (to find the same central position of the slat cover relative to the pool walls).
⑤ Wire only one sensor wire (either orange or white).

Electrical wiring

The electrical wiring of the motor to the control box remains the same, with the exception of the sensor wires in the case of a motor with limit switches:

  • Unlike the MIS, immersed Coveo motors have 2 sensors, thus one extra wire,
  • Only one of the 2 wires in question should be wired: either the orange or the white one.
