Swimming pool cracks: treatment and repair

Swimming pool crack repairsHave you noticed a crack in your pool or observed unusual water loss? Act quickly to identify the cause of the problem and rectify it before it worsens. Even a minimal crack can signal a serious structural problem. If detected in time, this will allow you to carry out the necessary repairs to prevent further damage. Depending on the size and scope of the crack, you may be able to handle it yourself or call in an expert for more complex work.

The different types of cracks

Depending on the type of your pool, you may notice cracks in various places: on the tiling, in the concrete, in the shell coating, or on the coping surrounding the basin.

Cracks in concrete can have several origins. If only the surface screed is affected, it may be due to a problem during installation or a low-quality material. However, if the screed itself shows cracks, the cause is likely related to ground movement. Similarly, tiling that loses its watertightness may require new joints or reveal a more serious structural issue.

We speak of stabilized cracks when the problem does not worsen. In this case, repairing leaks and cracks after ground settlement is usually enough for the problem to resolve. Conversely, active cracks in the concrete suggest deterioration over time, and simple repairs are not sufficient. It will then be necessary to call an expert to diagnose and attempt to correct the problem.

How to spot cracks in the pool?

Pool cracks are often noticed because of a water leak: the stabilization level then shows the location of the crack. Sometimes, you can see or feel the relief with the naked eye or by touch under the liner, but they can also be too thin to be immediately detected. In case of doubt, leak detection can help you identify the problem. Cracks in or under the tile can be revealed when certain tiles are damaged or fall off.

By wetting the concrete, it is often possible to visualize the cracked areas after drying and measure their extent. To determine if they are stabilized or active, you can apply a strip of cement perpendicular to the crack and observe if it cracks over time. If it does, it indicates that the crack is active, the problem is worsening, and you must act quickly.

How to carry out crack repairs?

For a shell pool, a cracked coating can be repaired with a suitable kit, but if the shell itself is damaged, it is best to call an expert. In the case of a tiled pool, porous joints or surface cracks are easily repaired with a flexible mortar or waterproofing coating, as long as the structure is intact. Otherwise, it will be necessary to contact an expert. Similarly, on stone coping, a simple coating may suffice if the cracks are small and few; otherwise, it is better to consider replacing them.

When concrete shows cracks, it is essential to assess the gravity of the sealing problem as well as its origin. Small repairs…

Repairs using high-alumina cement mortar or polyurethane sealant can be considered, provided that a porosity and waterproofing treatment is subsequently carried out. However, if the crack is significant, it is necessary for a professional to reinforce the concrete using a fiberglass mesh. For major active cracks, structural interventions will be indispensable.

Repair or renovate? Call an expert?

Depending on the severity of the cracks, it may be wise to proceed with a complete renovation of the pool. Small DIY repairs might not be enough, and poorly treated sealing problems can lead to the progressive deterioration of the basin materials. In all cases, cracks wider than 2 mm require the intervention of a professional who can establish a diagnosis and advise you on the actions to take.

If your pool is several years old, a renovation could also be an opportunity to carry out other work: installing a new liner, painting work… Consulting a professional will allow you to obtain quotes and take stock of the condition and future of your basin.

Preventing cracks in the pool

Ideally, one must anticipate the risk of cracks from the moment your pool is installed. The expert responsible for the work must conduct a ground diagnosis and its possible movements before starting. It is therefore crucial to call upon a recognized person, experienced in pool construction, who will know how to guide you and implement the appropriate solutions.
