Winterizing product for swimming pools: how to use it?

Produit d'hivernage pour piscine : comment l'utiliser ?

Winterizing products are designed to keep your pool in good condition during the cold season. They provide concentrated and versatile protection that preserves the appearance and cleanliness of your pool. These products are essential to facilitate the reopening of your pool during sunny days. However, it is important to follow certain guidelines to achieve satisfactory results. Here is what you need to know to use these products correctly.

The role of the winterizing product

This product is a highly active concentrate whose main mission is to keep your pool clean and clear. A good winterizing product will simplify the reactivation of your pool when spring arrives. This type of maintenance solution prevents the pool from becoming cloudy or having a green bottom, which is aesthetically unpleasing. Although the winterizing product preserves water quality, it should not be considered an antifreeze. This product, specially formulated for swimming pools, is safe and does not contain elements harmful to health.

Two actions in a single product

The winterizing product acts in two ways: it prevents the proliferation of bacteria and algae; it prevents limescale deposits, dirt, and minerals from accumulating at the bottom of the pool. These actions limit the phenomenon of cloudy water and also reduce the buildup of grime on the walls. The winterizing product also has a prolonged effect that keeps the water stable throughout the winter period.

Instructions for use of the winterizing product

Winterizing products can be used on all types of pools, regardless of the chosen winterizing method. They are effective on both pools where filtration is stopped and those that are partially drained, and their use is actually recommended in these situations.

These products are not mandatory, but remain highly recommended for the proper maintenance of an active winterizing pool.

Clean the pool beforehand

They should be used when the temperature is below 15°C. Whichever brand is chosen, it is imperative to start by cleaning your pool. Thorough cleaning of the walls and less accessible parts will make the winterizing product more effective. It may also be necessary to perform a deep clean of your pool filter. This step is in addition to the annual chemical cleaning of the filter.

You must then adjust the pool’s pH to a balanced level, before stopping standard treatments. Depending on the selected winterizing product, some pools might require an additional treatment. In this case, it will be necessary to wait one day before applying the winterizing product.

Add the product

Once the previous steps are complete, you can add the product directly into the pool, a few centimeters from the return nozzles. Run the filtration for at least 2 hours so that the winterizing product is well distributed throughout the pool. This procedure ensures a homogeneous distribution in the pool water.

It is generally advisable to carry out winter filtering in the morning. The low-concentration product ensures the healthiness of the water in the pool. However, it does not provide adequate protection against external dirt. It is therefore recommended to use a pool cover that complies with safety standards in order to avoid the accumulation of polluting particles.
