How to calculate the water volume?

calcul volume eau piscine rectangulaire

It is essential to know your pool’s volume in order to properly adapt its equipment (such as the filtration pump, chlorinator, or heat pump, for example). Here, we offer advice and formulas to easily determine the volume of a swimming pool, regardless of its shape: rectangular, round, or oval.

Rectangular pool: evaluating water volume

The rectangular shape is the easiest to measure, as the pool volume is calculated by multiplying the surface area by the water depth.

Volume = Length x Width x Average Depth

Illustration of the water volume calculation for a rectangular pool

  • Case of a rectangular pool with a Length of 10 m, a Width of 4 m, and an Average Depth of 1.40 m.
  • Water volume in cubic meters: 10 x 4 x 1.40 = 56 m3

Round pool: evaluating water volume

The volume of a round pool is easily determined using the diameter and the following formula:

Volume = Radius x Radius x 3.14 x Average Depth

Average Depth = (shallow end depth + deep end depth) / 2

Example of the water volume calculation formula for a round pool

  • Example of a round pool with a Diameter of 6.10 m and a Water Depth of 1.20 m.
  • Water volume in cubic meters: 3.05 x 3.05 x 3.14 x 1.20 = 35.05 m3

Oval pool: evaluating water volume

The volume of an oval pool is easily calculated using the following formula:

Volume = Length x Width x Average Water Depth x 0.89

Illustration of the formula to calculate the water volume of an oval pool

  • Example of an oval pool measuring 8 m long, 3.5 m wide, and 1.30 m deep.
  • Volume in cubic meters: 8 x 3.5 x 1.3 x 0.89 = 32.40 m3

Estimating the volume of a pool with a sloped bottom

To calculate the volume of a pool with a sloped bottom, the first step is to determine the average depth of the basin. This value is calculated by adding the shallowest depth to the deepest depth, then dividing the total by two. Following this, the volume is obtained by multiplying the length, width, and average depth.

For a rectangular or square pool with a sloped bottom, the formula would be:Volume = Length x Width x Average Depth

It is important to mention that these calculations are approximate and may vary slightly depending on the precise configuration of the pool.

Method for calculating the number of liters of water in a pool

To evaluate the amount of water required to fill a pool, you need to know its dimensions, specifically its length, width, and depth. You can then apply the following formula:

Water Quantity = Length × Width × Depth

For example, if your swimming pool is 10 meters long, 5 meters wide, and 2 meters deep, the calculation would be:

10m × 5m × 2m = 100m3

In this case, you will need 100 cubic meters of water to fill your pool. Remember to take into account water loss during the initial filling and adjust accordingly.
