Pool Filtration – Which System to Choose for Your Pool?
Filtration plays a crucial role in ensuring crystal clear and clean water in your pool. In this guide, you will find our recommendations to wisely choose your pool filtration system.
Why is filtration so essential?
Filtration is paramount to keep a clean and pleasant pool. This process circulates water through a filter, removing impurities and clarifying the water.
Initially, when you fill your pool with public supply water, the water is clear and clean. However, various external elements such as dust in the air, rain, and swimmers can quickly contaminate this water. Furthermore, ambient heat promotes the proliferation of bacteria and the appearance of green algae. Without a suitable filtration and treatment system, the water can turn green and become unsuitable for swimming.
In this article, discover how effective filtration can help you preserve healthy water in order to fully enjoy your pool throughout the summer.
How to improve the water quality of a pool?
To maintain optimal pool water quality, two treatments must be combined: chemical treatment and mechanical filtration :
- Chemical treatment: this consists of balancing the water using disinfectants (chlorine, bromine, oxygen) to prevent the development of bacteria and other undesirable microorganisms.
- Mechanical filtration: it is necessary to install a filtration system in your pool. The latter will trap impurities that have been suspended thanks to the chemical treatment.
Operation of a pool filtration system
Skimmers, return jets, and main drains are connected to a filtration pump and a filter. The pump sucks water from the pool and sends it into the filter, which captures the largest impurities. Once fully filtered, the clean water is sent back into the pool.
It is therefore essential to have two elements to filter your pool water: the filtration pump and the filter.
Which type of pool filter to choose โ Sand filter, cartridge filter, diatomaceous earth filter
First, define the type of filter you need. The choice of filter will influence the choice of the pump for your pool.
There are several types of filters, including cartridge filters, diatomaceous earth filters, and sand filters. The sand filter is the most commonly used model in residential swimming pools.
The sand filter consists of several components:
- The diffuser
- A tube ensuring proper circulation
- Automatic purge
- A collector for water recovery with a system of lateral pipes
- The pressure gauge
- A multiport valve
The following table helps you determine the appropriate sand filter based on the volume of your pool:
How to Choose a Filtration Pump for Your Pool?
Choosing a pump can be complicated for those unfamiliar with the subject. Indeed, sizing depends on several factors (length of the filtration circuit, ground elevation, available equipment, etc.). However, for a standard pool, its volume is sufficient to estimate the necessary pump power.
โ ๏ธ Warning : Pay attention to the pump flow rate. To compare two pumps, do not rely solely on horsepower. Examine the pressure curves to evaluate the flow rate and make an informed comparison.
We offer a wide selection of pool pumps with high hydraulic efficiency ranging from 0.33 hp to 2 hp.
The table below allows you to properly size your pump according to the volume of your pool:
| Pool volume | Filtration pump |
|---|---|
| 0 โ 40 m3 | 0.3 hp |
| 40 โ 75 m3 | 0.5 hp |
| 75 โ 90 m3 | 0.75 hp |
| 90 โ 130 m3 | 1 hp |
| 130 โ 170 m3 | 1.5 hp |
| 170 โ 200 m3 | 2 hp |
Pool Filtration Systems
Do you have an above-ground or inground pool of less than 70 m3?
Make your life easier by opting for a pool filtration kit (also known as a filtration group). The sand filter and pump are designed for performance and come pre-assembled.
The table below helps you choose the right filtration group based on the volume of your pool:
